Writing Novels - an excuse?

If we manage to publish a novel, people will hold off - but if we've been mumbling about it for years and there's nothing bearing our name on the bookshop shelves - people will talk. The obvious criticism is that you're taking too long to get nowhere when instead you could: cook more muffins; weed the garden; ring your aunt; be nicer to friends; or just get a life.
